About: Friends of Hedionda Creek is a grassroots group of people who want to preserve and protect the Agua Hedionda Creek Valley in northern San Marcos and the County of San Diego. The headwaters of Agua Hedionda Creek run through this valley. The valley contains undisturbed coastal sage scrub and riparian habitat, which are vital to the functioning of the creek. It is also an important wildlife corridor, connecting two of the largest open spaces remaining in the area. The Agua Hediondo Creek Valley is threatened by development. The City of San Marcos has approved a tentative map for the San Marcos Highlands project, which would place 230 dwelling units on either side of the creek and remove 76 acres of coastal sage scrub, replacing it with impervious cover such as asphalt and concrete. The development would also sever the wildlife corridor, preventing the animals from reaching the creek. Friends of Hedionda Creek has been fighting this development for several years. We believe that this valley should be part of the North County MHCP/MSCP Preserve, and that the undisturbed natural habitat surrounding the creek should stay that way.
